I was at the local indoor range today. For rifles above .22LR, only HP or SP ammo are allowed.

Since my stash of ammo for my rifles is entirely FMJ, I have to purchase their "house range rounds" which are reloaded .223 soft points. I've never had any issues other than the distinct "amonia" smell after firing. (Is this normal?)

Today from the 100 rounds I fired, I had 3 that loaded but didn't fire. I pulled the charger to eject the problem round, and the bullet tip was deeply scratched and gouged as though it didn't chamber properly. The next rounds fired fine. When done, I loaded these three problem rounds in an empty mag and the all fired properly.

Would a simple slap on the forward assist before ejecting the round be the correct thing to do?

Not in my opinion. I think you did the right thing in the first place. If the round doesn't fire or chamber, get it out of there and feed a good round in it.
