Anyone here associated with the Sons of Confederate Veterans? I sent them some samples and never heard back from them. I was at least hoping to get some feedback. Although I guess no response may be my answer.

What do you need? There should be a local camp in your area. If not there are other avenues. Did you send them your family history/documentation?

One of my direct ancestors lived in southwest Virginia, (Botetourt and Fincastle County) during the Civil War. His cousins were spread all over the states and territories. Most of them fought, about equally on both sides.

He was said to have served as a “scout for General Cox” but no mention of which side. Then up in the middle of the war he, and his young family up and leave, settling in Iowa where his older brother had moved two decades before.

What would “served as a scout” mean?

Ever see the movie Gettysburg? A scout was usually a civilian doing recon behind enemy lines. They would often shadow the enemy for days to determine troop strength and movement.
