Here is an ARRL write up worth reading
http://www.arrl.org/news/mars-urging-members-to-use-computers-that-are-isolated-from-the-internet

Anyone using digital modes via radio should read and heed...
quote:
US Army Military Auxiliary Radio System (MARS) Headquarters is recommending that MARS members “migrate to stand-alone computer systems for [MARS] radio operations,” subject to the availability of a dedicated computer.

“These computer systems (or their associated local area networks) should be ‘air-gapped’ from the internet,” Army MARS Headquarters Operations Officer David McGinnis, K7UXO, said in a message to members. “Although not a requirement for membership at this time, we will continue make this a condition of certain parts of our exercises.”

Those who haven't been listening to current events might also take a look at this warning.
https://www.ic3.gov/media/2018/180525.aspx
First paragraph pasted below -
quote:
The FBI recommends any owner of small office and home office routers power cycle (reboot) the devices. Foreign cyber actors have compromised hundreds of thousands of home and office routers and other networked devices worldwide. The actors used VPNFilter malware to target small office and home office routers. The malware is able to perform multiple functions, including possible information collection, device exploitation, and blocking network traffic.
Keeping the working PC off the internet is likely a wise choice - YMMV

Good advice. The same should apply to militia/survival communications.
